CITY OF CALGARY

The City of Calgary has been planning for a New Central Library since 2004, when it first devoted funds to study Calgarians’ future library needs. It has been championed by councillor Druh Farrell (councillor for Ward 7, which includes East Village) and many others throughout the years. For the City – which committed $175 million to the NCL – a great library system reflects a commitment to accessible learning for all.

CMLC

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation is the master developer of East Village. Our organization, a subsidiary of the City of Calgary, has worked to revitalize the Rivers District – beginning with East Village – since 2007. The team is made up of expert placemakers – from planners to engineers, architects, communicators and more – who have brought the masterplan for East Village to vivid life. In 2013, CMLC committed $70 million toward the New Central Library, and is responsible for delivering a finished library to Calgarians in collaboration with our partners.

CALGARY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Calgary Public Library operates 18 individual libraries throughout the region, including the Central Library. The Calgary library system now has the highest number of card-carrying members in Canada: since membership fees were abolished, the already impressive membership numbers have climbed to more than 500,000! As experts on the way people use libraries, the library team has, of course, been an integral part of the process of creating a New Central Library.

ADD IN

The Calgary Public Library Foundation’s Add In Campaign is a bold, audacious vision to take a great library system and transform it into the best in the world. The $350 million city-wide campaign will build capacity for each and every community library and will include projects with a strong impact for Library customers. While the New Central Library is fully-funded, Add In aims to bring the landmark building to life with programs, services and sophisticated uses of spaces and technology.
