What is a BSGI breast imaging?
Breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) is an adjunct modality for breast imaging that, like MRI, uses a physiologic approach to identify lesions in the breast. BSGI has shown sensitivity of 96.4%, comparable with MRI [10], and specificity of 93.3%, greater than MRI [11].
What is Bsgi?
Breast-specific gamma imaging or molecular breast imaging is a diagnostic procedure performed as a follow-up study to a mammogram that detects cancer or is inconclusive in its findings. BSGI is used to detect: additional lesions missed by mammography and physical exam.
How serious is asymmetry on mammogram?
Developing asymmetry has a moderate likelihood of malignancy, seen on 12.8% of screening and 26.7% of diagnostic mammograms (5).
How accurate is molecular breast imaging?
Molecular breast imaging increased the detection rate of invasive breast cancers by more than 360 percent when used in addition to regular screening mammography, according to the study.
Does Medicare cover molecular breast imaging?
Medicare is currently the only provider covering the cost of this exam for diagnostic purposes only. All others are self pay. The cost of the exam is $539. This fee includes the radioisotope, technical and professional (reading) components, all included in one fee.
Is a breast MRI necessary?
Breast MRI should always be used as a supplement to mammography. These two modalities can visualize breast cancers in different ways, and together provide the most information to the radiologist. Specifically, breast MRI is not always able to identify the earliest form of breast cancer: ductal carcinoma in situ.
Is there an alternative to breast MRI?
Through our nuclear medicine department, UC San Diego Health offers molecular breast imaging (MBI), also known as breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI), as an alternative to MRI. As with MRI, molecular breast imaging can be useful in detecting cancers that are difficult to detect using mammography alone.
Does breast asymmetry go away?
It is quite common for breast size to be unequal during puberty. If they are different sizes near the end of puberty, they are likely to stay unequal. There is no medical need for treatment for unequal breast size. Unequal breasts won’t affect breastfeeding or increase breast cancer risk.
