Can you put a locking nut on any guitar?
No you can’t for 2 reasons. One, you need fine tuners on your bridge because after locking it must be tuned. Two, you need enough room behind the nut because if you mount it on the headstock it will pull the strings too much when tightening the locks.
What does a locking guitar nut do?
The locking nut is integral to the high-performance tremolo system – it removes the non-playing part of each string from the equation by locking it down. This Floyd Rose one is the most commonplace but it’s also quite common to see the nut height set wrong – often by the factory.
Does a locking nut keep a guitar in tune?
Do Locking Tuners Really Keep Guitar Tuned? If you compare locking tuners with regular ones, the answer is yes. Locking tuners are much more efficient in keeping the strings stable and in tune. However, that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to tune your guitar strings now and then.
Can I use locking tuners instead of locking nut?
they won’t work as well as a locking nut though. the key to keeping a non locking trem in tune is to make sure the nut is cut properly and the strings go across it in as straight a line as possible. as long as the string doesn’t get hung up on the nut it will stay in tune.
Do you need locking tuners if you have a locking nut?
No. Locking tuners mostly make string changes a lot easier. I’d imagine with locking tuners, it might add some stability, but not as much as a locking nut. Locking nuts prevent the string from moving period.
Do I need a locking nut?
Locking nuts should be used when the screw joint consists of one or more soft materials. It is difficult to achieve and to maintain a high level of clamp load because the soft material deforms due to high surface pressure. This plastic deformation continues after the torque value has been applied to the screw.
Can you put a locking nut on any neck?
you should be able to modify any existing neck to take a locking nut. it’s just a matter of removing (or occasionally adding) the right amount of wood from where the existing nut sits.
Can you use a locking nut without a Floyd Rose?
You don’t “need” the locking nut for a floyd. Chris Broderick had some guitars with floyds but no locking nut. As for the locking tuners they do help keep it in tune a lot better especially if considering going without the locking nut.
Are locking tuners better?
Less windings generally means quicker and easier restringing. But the main advantage of locking tuners is with tremolo-equipped guitars. By locking the strings to the tuner, this reduces the amount of string slippage due to use of the tremolo bar and results in reduced tuning problems resulting from tremolo use.
What do locking tuners actually do?
Locking tuners are tuners which have a pin or retaining mechanism that locks the string in place and prevents your string from coming loose. These types of tuners are usually adjusted by tightening or loosening a knob on the back of the headstock.
Can you put a locking nut on a Strat?
you cannot put a locking nut on a strat with a standard bridge (2 or 6 point). without fine tuners, the locking nut would throw your tuning out of wack.
Do you need a retainer bar on a locking nut guitar?
Now, you’d think that a guitar with a locking nut wouldn’t strictly need a string retainer because the nut string clamps will just lock those strings down so the section between nut and tuners is out of the picture. Well, yes. That’s true. To an extent. On instruments fitted with locking nuts, though, these retainer bars perform another function.

What happens when you tighten a locking nut string?
This gap means that, when you tighten down the string clamps, the string’s tuning will be pulled sharp. The clamp will fasten down onto the string, closing that gap and stretching the string in the process. This will obviously increase the pitch.
