Is hollow core braid good?
Hollow core is great for braided backing on big game reels or to use smaller reels for big game fishing by filling them completely to the brim with braid and having some knotless mono at the top to work with.
Why do people hollow braid?
Like solid braid, hollow core braided is extremely strong. The main difference with hollow core is that you can splice your leader into it. This gives you a smoother transition between your line and leader, giving you a smoother cast and better packing into your reel.
Is hollow core braid thicker?
The hollow seems much thicker, the only advantage I see is the mono will fit inside the hollow portion, but the RP knot seems to work fine for me.

When do you need to splice a HSS section?
Identical, or similar-sized, HSS members frequently need to be joined end-to-end, or spliced, particularly in long-span construction and in tall columns. The familiar steel construction maxim of “weld in the shop, bolt in the field”, naturally applies.
Why do you need to splice a rope?
Modern, strong, high modulus fibers are often slippery and cannot be secured with customarily trustworthy knots and splices. These fibers encouraged the development of the loosely woven, hollow braid ropes in which the fiber-alignment maximized strength. These ropes require suitable splicing techniques such as the Brummel and Long Bury.
What can a sliding splice be used for?
The Sliding Splice is the exception. We created it to make a Sailor’s Rope Belt – for which it is well suited – and was never intended to take a critical load. Some workers installing electricity cables, however, have reported using the same splice to haul cables through buried pipes.
