What is binding and Purfling?
BINDING – Ornamental strips of plastic, wood, nitrocellulose or other materials added to the edges of a guitar’s back and top where they join the sides. PURFLING – Ornamental inlay strips typically placed inside the binding around the edges of the top of a guitar (and sometimes the back).
What is Purfling used for?
As with so much of the violin, it serves a dual role: practical and aesthetic. Practically, it helps keep your instrument together—literally. The purfling acts as a binder, preventing cracks from developing and traveling into the plates as they shrink and expand due to changes in the weather and humidity.
What is fretboard purfling?
Purfling is a narrow decorative edge inlaid into the top plate and often the back plate of a stringed instrument. Inexpensive instruments may have no purfling and instead simulate the appearance with paint.
How can you tell if purfling is real?
To know if a violin’s purfling is inlaid, take a magnifying glass and closely examine the grain of the wood where the purfling falls. If you can see the grain of the wood peeping through the purfling and it appears to be the same as the grain of wood surrounding the violin, then the purfling is painted on.
Why do guitars have binding?
Binding on acoustic guitars serve to protect the edges of the wood from impact and, particularly where end grain would be exposed, moisture damage. On solid-body electric guitars it serves only a cosmetic purpose.

When the binding is scraped flush to the wood, you can sand it along with the wood itself as if they were one. Use 220-grit or finer sandpaper, working up to final sanding with Fre-Cut Open Coat sandpaper in 320-grit. Some builders prefer to sand to as fine as 400-grit before finishing.
