What is Slabstock foam?
Slabstock polyurethane foam is the heart and soul of comfort in many consumer products. Comprehensive range of standard polyurethane raw materials (TDI, MDI and polyether polyols) supplied from our North American plants. Differentiated isocyanate blends and polyols grades, including graft polyols.
How is foam processed?
Foams are made by forming gas bubbles in a plastic mixture, with the use of a blowing agent. Foam manufacture is either a continuous process for making laminate or slabstock or a batch process for making various shapes by cutting or molding.
What is Slabstock polyol?
Flexible Slabstock Polyol is a polyether and on reaction with catalysts and additives, yields polyurethane foams used in upholstery, mattresses, pillows, boosters, transport seating and packaging.
How are foam products manufactured?
Liquid chemicals are first delivered to foam rubber manufacturing plants. These generally arrive by railroad or tank trucks. The materials are then stored inside large holding tanks until they are ready to receive further attention. From there, the chemicals are pumped into smaller heated holding tanks.
How do you make polyurethane foam?
Polyurethane foam is made by reacting di‐isocyanates and polyols. Both of these products are derived from crude oil. Polyols may also be made of natural oils from renewable sources. When these ingredients are mixed, they react and foam.
What is bed foam made of?
Polyurethane foam is made up primarily of compounds derived from petrochemicals. Many mattress manufacturers use polyurethane foam as the top layer of spring mattresses. This is done primarily because polyurethane is very inexpensive, not because it is high quality.
How does a foaming agent work?
A foaming agent is a material that facilitates the formation of foam such as a surfactant or a blowing agent. A surfactant, when present in small amounts, reduces surface tension of a liquid (reduces the work needed to create the foam) or increases its colloidal stability by inhibiting coalescence of bubbles.
Why is there a foam shortage 2021?
The ongoing global pandemic coupled with severe winter storms that hit the southern U.S. in February 2021 have caused massive delays and shortages in the chemical components of foam. Suppliers of everything from furniture and mattresses to boats and blown-in insulation are coping with shortages of this major component.
